The Outaouais Touristic Region (across the Ottawa River from Ottawa, Canada's Capital), is full of enchanting natural sites that are little known, but oh so fascinating to discover. The municipality of Chelsea is part of the rural territory Outaouais Hills, but still very close to Gatineau and Ottawa (within 18 minutes from downtown). So, close to us, within a range of around 40 km, there's a multitude of activities, wether outdoors or cultural, that will satisfy everybody's taste. Here are the ones I chose for you that are fun to do in this winter.
Crosscountry Skiing, Hiking and Winter Biking
Right here on premisses, you will find the Chelsea-Wakefield Community Trail, a beautiful and easy (flat) 20 km-long trail that links Chelsea to Wakefield, right by the Gatineau River. You can walk, snowshoe, ski (the trail is groomed for classical CCS) or ride your winter bike. And it's free! :-) (See pictures below)
Gatineau Park is, of course, a must for outdoors lovers, with tens of trails for crosscountry skiing, hiking, snowshoeing and winter biking. Every Friday, you can register to the activity Snowshoeing under the stars. Warm shelters with fire place welcome visitors for a well-deserved pause and some even bring their meal-to-go for an impromptu feast among friends.
Skating in the forest is more and more popular and we are very privileged to be close to Wolf Lake Site (39 km or 31 min by car) where you can skate in the forest on a 3 km ice trail.
Closer to us, at only 5 km away, the Visitor Centre Outdoor rink, in the heart of Chelsea, welcomes every skating lover, as well as the Rideau Hall Governor General's outdoor rink, only 21 km or 19 min away, and open to public on Saturdays and Sundays (depending on the ice condition).
Of course, Rideau Canal, the longest outdoor skating rink in the World, is a must for every skater who loves to skate straight forward for many km at a time. The National Art Center station is located 21 km or 20 min away and paid parking is available right next to it at Rideau Center.
Downhill Skiing and Snowboarding
Like our sector's name says, Outaouais Hills offer many hills to downhill skiing and snowboarding lovers. The station closest to us is Camp Fortune, at 11.5 km or 15 min away. Other stations like Vorlage (18 km or 14 min), Edelweiss (24,6 km or 19 min) and Mont-Cascades (28.5 km or 27 min), less than 30 minutes away, also offer equipment rentals and night skiing.
Dog Sleigh, Aerial Park and Underground Cavern
For those who love dogs and sleighs, we haven't forgotten you. The Outaouais region offers many good addresses such as these two which are closest to us: Adventure Farm in Low (42 km or 31 min) and Timberland, à Bristol, (59 km ou 53 min).
Les amateurs de traîneaux à chiens ne seront pas en reste, car l'Outaouais propose plusieurs bonnes adresses dont deux qui sont les plus près de nous, la Ferme L'Aventure in Low (42 km ou 31 min), and Timberland in Bristol (59 km or 53 min).
For those who fuel up on thrills and excitement, Arbraska and Laflèche Cavern (32 km or 25 min) will satisfy the most intrepid with their aerial trail and zip line, as well as their unique wide underground cavern.
Hiking Explorations with an Expert-Guide
Hikers will love to explore our region's wonders of nature, either in the city or in the countryside, along with an Expert-Guide who will make them discover hidden treasures on well-known and less-known trails...
